Every piece of live edge free form furniture from J.D. Lohr is made from salvaged trees. It is very difficult to capture the massiveness and extraordinary beauty of much of this work in a photograph. Please suffice it to say that like all of my work, the photos (although of excellent professional quality) do not really do the pieces justice. If you look at me standing next to the table pictured at left, the piece extends considerably both in front of me as well as behind. I am 6ft tall, although the perspective does not translate well here, I think you can see that you could easily fit two of me laying on the table lengthwise, head to toe meeting where the bottle is placed in the middle.
Great care must be taken to mill, stabilize, and engineer thick wide material of this scale into furniture. A superior knowledge and experience with wood movement, long and short grain characteristics, expansion coefficients, and large scale joinery techniques is key to a successful outcome.
